The problem stemmed from an old work injury to my lower back. The chiropractor used a "wedge" method to treat my back but unfortunately that was not the right remedy for me. I was playing softball at a company softball game, I picked up a bag of baseball bats and my neck and right side locked up, I was all crooked.<br />
<br />
A friend told me the chiropractors I was going to were not getting the job done, he referred me to an old self described "Navy Doctor" who said "You'll be in and outa here in less than 7 minutes", he then gave me a very fast and very jarring adjustment, and I felt fantastic, so I went to a few more appointments until I was referred to a Doctor who was the head of the chiropractic association, he adjusted me in a less harsh way but still and effective way, I went to that doctor until he moved away and then I found a chiropractor that I visited for about 20 years. During all of this I never thought of acupuncture, but then after getting married and being influenced by my new wife, I wound up at <a href="https://www.drrandymartin.com/">Dr. Randy Martins</a> office in the valley, he put me in a quiet room with soft music playing, candles burning, he applied the needles, no pain at all, a few tiny pinches but he's good at it so it was pretty painless. I wound up in such a deep sleep and was snoring so loud, he decided to leave me there to rest, I have never felt so rested, it was really obvious that the treatment had helped me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nG9g6DPjs68/XVTpOqwRmPI/AAAAAAAAMKo/GoMEGfxqXJkJlfA5aYTa2cTT06EigNnSgCLcBGAs/s1600/Acupuncture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="640" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nG9g6DPjs68/XVTpOqwRmPI/AAAAAAAAMKo/GoMEGfxqXJkJlfA5aYTa2cTT06EigNnSgCLcBGAs/s400/Acupuncture.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since having acupuncture and making a number of life changes, I've managed to stay out of the chiropractors office and stay off pain pills.<br />
<br />
If you haven't tried acupuncture, I highly recommend it.<br />

Now astronomers have taken a bunch of baby pictures of these galaxy clusters, capturing them when they’re just a couple billion years old (that’s young, considering the universe is 13.8 billion years old). With more than 200 likely baby clusters, it’s the biggest such haul ever, providing clues to dark matter and how galaxies form and evolve over time.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Galaxy clusters form the structural backbone of the universe—it’s where all the <span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4i', 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">stuff</span> is. Astronomers have seen plenty of these clusters throughout the universe, but what’s been elusive are the young clusters. The farther you look in space, the longer it takes the light to reach your eyes, and the farther back in time you’re looking. So the youngest clusters have to be really distant, which makes them really dim. And because they’re young, they haven’t had much time to build a lot of bright stars, making them even harder to detect.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Clusters are also difficult to find because they occupy just a sliver of the enormous expanse of space. “These are what I would call the one-percent regions—these are the most concentrated regions in our entire universe,” says <a href="http://www.ucolick.org/~koo/home.html" style="-webkit-transition: background 0.15s cubic-bezier(0.33, 0.66, 0.66, 1); border-bottom-color: rgb(180, 231, 248); border-bottom-style: solid; border-width: 0px 0px 3px; box-shadow: rgb(180, 231, 248) 0px -5px 0px inset; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: background 0.15s cubic-bezier(0.33, 0.66, 0.66, 1); vertical-align: baseline;">David Koo</a>, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. “They’re like the ultra wealthy parts of space.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Which is why astronomers have only found a few baby clusters. But thanks to the Planck satellite, which watches the entire sky, astronomers have located the 200 galaxy clusters at the edge of the cosmos, when the universe was just three billion years old. “In one fell swoop they suddenly have so many to study,” says Koo, who wasn’t involved in the new findings. “That’s pretty impressive.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Planck’s main task is to study the cosmic microwave background—the afterglow that bathed the universe after the big bang. But the satellite also measures light at other wavelengths, allowing it to pick up signals from early galaxies. So astronomers scoured the Planck data and found a couple hundred of these bright spots (marked by the black dots in the gorgeous image below). They then pointed the Herschel space telescope, which measures far infrared and wavelengths just under a millimeter, at each of these sources. When they zoomed in closer, the astronomers found that these regions of space were indeed extra dense, each containing at least about 10 young galaxies churning out new stars at a prodigious rate up to a 1,500 times greater than the Milky Way.</div>

These still-forming galaxies are in their formative years. Like young humans, they’re susceptible to the influence of their peers. Enormous black holes forming at the center of these galaxies may produce powerful jets that blow away gas in neighboring galaxies. Gas is the stuff stars are made of, so if the galaxy next to you is blasting your gas away, you won’t be able to make stars. The gravitational tug of nearby galaxies can also strip you of stars and gas. But exactly how much does a galaxy’s upbringing dictate its fate? Or is its future ruled mainly by innate properties like size and mass? The young clusters may hold answers. “You have these special rare regions where you can compare properties of these galaxies with properties of galaxies outside the region,” Koo says.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Exchange SSm 4r', Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Clusters are also the cosmic hubs of dark matter, that mysterious and invisible stuff that acts as gravitational glue binding all the galaxies together. “They may offer one of the best ways for us to learn what dark matter is,” says <a href="https://lavinia.as.arizona.edu/~bfrye/BrendaFrye.html" style="-webkit-transition: background 0.15s cubic-bezier(0.33, 0.66, 0.66, 1); border-bottom-color: rgb(180, 231, 248); border-bottom-style: solid; border-width: 0px 0px 3px; box-shadow: rgb(180, 231, 248) 0px -5px 0px inset; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: background 0.15s cubic-bezier(0.33, 0.66, 0.66, 1); vertical-align: baseline;">Brenda Frye</a>, an astronomer at the University of Arizona who was a part of the new research. Galaxies “are not just moving however they like—they don’t have free will,” she says. “They’re responding to what the gravitational potential is telling it to do.” In other words, by studying how galaxies in clusters move, astronomers can infer dark matter’s gravitational influence, measure its properties, and learn the role it plays in a young galaxy’s life.</div>

Astronomers still have to confirm that all of the young clusters really are clusters, and not a mix of nearby and distant galaxies that just happened to be in the same field of view. They most likely are, but no one knows for sure until researchers do a comprehensive analysis. Then comes the work of studying each of the young clusters in detail. “This will take many years of follow-up observations to really understand fully,” Koo says. “But certainly at this early stage it’s an exciting prospect.”</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Gov. Jerry Brown, standing on a patch of brown grass in the Sierra Nevada that is usually covered with several feet of snow at this time of year, on Wednesday announced the first mandatory water restrictions in California history.<br />
<br />
"It's a different world," he said. "We have to act differently."<br />
<br />
Brown was on hand Wednesday as state officials took stock of historically abysmal levels of snowpack in the Sierra Nevada amid the state's grinding drought. It was the first time that a governor attended the measuring event, which has taken place at Lake Tahoe since 1942.<br />
<br />
Brown ordered the California Water Resources Control Board to implement mandatory restrictions to reduce water usage by 25%. The water savings are expected to amount to 1.5 million acre-feet of water over the next nine months.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KGmCSLZnqAs/VRxjR0HpekI/AAAAAAAAGeQ/Oj1NZLWnfpM/s1600/SnowPak.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KGmCSLZnqAs/VRxjR0HpekI/AAAAAAAAGeQ/Oj1NZLWnfpM/s1600/SnowPak.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Snow pack image</span></div>
<br />
Other elements of Brown's order would:<br />
<br />
--Require golf courses, cemeteries and other large landscaped spaces to reduce water consumption.<br />
<br />
--Replace 50 million square feet of lawn statewide with drought-tolerant landscaping as part of a partnership with local governments.<br />
<br />
--Create a statewide rebate program to replace old appliances with more water- and energy-efficient ones.<br />
<br />
--Require new homes to have water-efficient drip irrigation if developers want to use potable water for landscaping.<br />
<br />
--Ban the watering of ornamental grass on public street medians.<br />
<br />
--Call on water agencies to implement new pricing models that discourage excessive water use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lb8lYVhUmL0/VRxjhSxVDsI/AAAAAAAAGeY/2uVs7u3lH9M/s1600/BrownWater2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lb8lYVhUmL0/VRxjhSxVDsI/AAAAAAAAGeY/2uVs7u3lH9M/s1600/BrownWater2.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
--Require agricultural to report more water usage information to the state so that regulators can better find waste and improper activities.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
--Create a mechanism to enforce requirements that water districts report usage numbers to the state.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Brown said drastic changes were necessary because it's unclear how long the drought will last, and the nearly nonexistent snowpack foreshadows another dry year. Cease-and-desist orders and fines could be issued to those who fail to comply with new restrictions, he said.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Electronic readings on Wednesday at about 100 stations across the Sierra showed that the water content of the snow was only about 5% of the state average for April 1, the date on which snowpack is normally considered at its peak. Official manual readings will be announced Wednesday afternoon.</div>

No-nonsense former military men, they were selected as an astronaut and cosmonaut in the 1990s. Kelly, 51, is a retired Navy captain and former space shuttle commander. Kornienko, 54, is a former paratrooper. The pair will blast off with Russian Gennady Padalka, a veteran spaceman who will spend six months at the orbiting lab.</span></span></div>

During that time, they will undergo extensive medical experiments, and prepare the station for the anticipated 2017 arrival of new U.S. commercial crew capsules. That means a series of spacewalks for Kelly. They also will oversee the comings and goings of numerous cargo ships, as well as other Russian-launched crews. Soprano superstar Sarah Brightman will stop by as a space tourist in September.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px;">Doctors are eager to learn what happens to Kelly and Kornienko once they surpass the usual six-month stay for space station residents. Bones and muscles weaken in weightlessness, as does the immune system. Body fluids also shift into the head when gravity is absent, and that puts pressure on the brain and the eyes, impairing vision for some astronauts in space. Might these afflictions peter out after six months, hold steady or ramp up? That's what researchers want to find out so they can protect Mars-bound crews in the decades ahead.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: proxima-nova, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 17px;">NASA's scientists couldn't resist when Kelly's identical twin brother, Mark, a retired astronaut, agreed to take part in many of the same medical experiments as his orbiting sibling. Researchers are eager to see how the space body compares with its genetic double on the ground. They won't follow the same diet or exercise regime, however. Mark, who's married to former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, said he has no intentions of consuming bland space-type food or working out and running two hours a day on a treadmill, as his brother will be doing.</span></span></div>

The Russians hold the world record of 14 months, set by a physician-cosmonaut aboard the former Mir station in 1994-1995. Several other Russians spent between eight and 12 months at Mir. Even if the product flopped (and that's a big "if"), it will still draw massive media attention, inspire hundreds of blog entries and attract thousands of consumers to every Apple Store. That attention will be based on the assumption that if Apple does something, it must be good.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

And if it is good, watch out -- Apple's assault on smartwatches could be similar to its assault in tablets. Apple wasn't the first company to release a tablet, but it has <a href="http://investor.apple.com/results.cfm" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(252, 215, 0); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #236dc9; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">dominated the market</a> ever since the original iPad arrived.</div>

Tablet Hybrids</h3>

Apple could also be given credit for revitalizing this seemingly dead category, but it's not the only one that stands to make a splash. Microsoft has been trying to demonstrate the power of tablet hybrids ever since it released the first Surface Pro. A fourth-generation model is likely to arrive in 2015, and who knows what will become of the consumer-focused Surface 2? It might receive an upgrade as well.</div>

The bigger news could come from Apple, however, which is <a href="http://www.benzinga.com/news/14/12/5098757/apples-new-12-inch-macbook-air-expected-to-enter-mass-production-in-q1-of-2015-ap" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(252, 215, 0); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #236dc9; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">rumored</a> to be developing a 12-inch MacBook Air. Not much is known about the mysterious (and still unconfirmed) device. It is expected to feature touch screen elements, however, which could usher in a whole new generation for the Mac OS.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Just as Apple will gain consumers' attention with the Apple Watch, the company could do wonders for hybrids if it decides to release one in 2015.</div>

Augmented reality has taken a backseat to the hype for VR, but there are some companies that hope to change that. The most notable is Google, but its wearable tech (Google Glass) is more of a tool and less of a reality enhancer.</div>
<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, FreeSans, Garuda, Helvetica, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin-bottom: 13px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Meta Company, on the other hand, is developing a true augmented reality experience. The firm's development kit retails for $667 and is <a href="https://www.spaceglasses.com/products" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgb(252, 215, 0); background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #236dc9; cursor: pointer; font-size: 14px; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">available for pre-order</a>. That, of course, is a problem almost every new technology endures. There was a time when high-definition TVs retailed for upwards of $10,000. Now one can be purchased for a few hundred bucks.
Will everyday consumers be able to buy a Meta headset in 2015? The answer is probably no. When the price comes down, however, Meta's products could become the most common AR tech available.
Other Wearables
Most people think that wearable technology is limited to watches, goggles and the fictional contraptions introduced in books, movies and TV shows.
In reality, there are tons of real-world wearable concepts in development, including smart shirts, smart vests and smart shoes. These may not change the world in the next 12 months, but expect them to become a bigger part of the wearable space as more developers enter the field.

The Navy unveiled on Tuesday the Ghostswimmer, a sharklike drone that can swim in waters as deep as 300 feet. The drone was developed by Boston Engineering, a Waltham, Mass.-based engineering consulting firm. It's intended for underwater surveillance operations, said Mark Smithers, chief technology officer and co-founder of the company, in an interview with CNBC.</div>

"You could have teams of these patrolling our borders and stopping illicit things from coming into our borders," he said. The drone is meant for basic prevention and "stopping people from doing bad things," Smithers added.</div>

The IRS does not care who does your taxes, they just want the taxes paid, and if you are like most who hire a tax firm, you can easily spend between $200.00 and $800.00 for the preparation and filing, and if you are incorporated or own a small business, the costs are even higher.<br />

Mysterious spikes of methane that cannot easily be explained by geology or other theories have been found by an instrument on the robot, which landed on the planet in 2012. Scientists can’t be sure what is causing the spikes, but it is possible that it could be very small, bacteria-like living organisms.</div>
<div style="font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
If the gas is coming from living microbes then it would mark one of the biggest discoveries in history. On Earth, 95% of methane comes from microbial organisms, but there are many non-biological processes that can also generate the gas.</div>
<div style="font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Scientists have said that the rover now has to test and re-test the possibility of life, ahead of an unmanned mission in 2020 that would look for the source of the methane.</div>

The European Space Agency’s ExoMars mission could also provide extra clues. In 2019 it will land a 300kg rover on Mars in 2019, equipped with a two-metre drill and extra equipment for investigating signs of life – although the European robot may be unable to reach the same place on the planet as the area currently being explored by Curiosity.
Previous satellite observations have detected unusual plumes of methane on the planet, but none as extraordinary as the sudden "venting" measured by Curiosity at the 96-mile wide Gale Crater, where evidence suggests water once flowed billions of years ago.<br />

<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Nasa reported last year that that Gale Crater contained the remains of an ancient freshwater lake where there may have been a hospitable environment for life in the distant past.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
The laboratory onboard the rover has been sniffing methane in the atmosphere a dozen times in the last 12 months. In late 2013 and early 2014, the amount of methane flared up, and then receded.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
At a press conference yesterday at the American Geophysical Union's convention in San Francisco, Nasa scientists said that besides living microbes, other possible explanations for the methane include the Sun's rays degrading organic material left behind by meteors.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
But that explanation, they added, still relies on the original material being deposited by an object that would have measured several metres across and left a large crater - no sign of which was visible.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
The scientists said other theories, such as volcanic deposits trapped in ice called clathrates, were ruled out by the short time-scale of the spikes.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
The discovery, also detailed in the journal Science, follows studies of gas samples using Curiosity’s Tunable Laser Spectrometer, an instrument which deploys intense light to carry out chemical analysis.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
It found a low background level of methane that spiked by over 10 times in a period of 60 Martian days.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
In four sequential measurements, Curiosity showed the methane level soaring from about 0.69 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) to 7.2 ppbv. The spikes came within 200-300 meters of each other. By the time Curiosity had travelled a further kilometre, the higher methane levels had disappeared.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Dr Chris Webster, of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said: "Strictly speaking, our observations are evidence for methane production on Mars, and in themselves cannot directly provide evidence of microbial life.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
"However, from our positive detection of methane on Mars, we cannot rule out the possibility that both the low background level and the high methane values originate in part from microbial activity.”</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
He said if any more spikes were found, the team would try to look for a particular isotope - or atomic variant - of carbon in the methane that would be an indicator of biological activity.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
"At this time,” added Dr Webster, “We have no idea what we will see in the future, or if we will ever see high values again."</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Another discovery by Curiosity was that of water bound in the fine-grained soil within the Gale crater, which was formed by a massive meteor strike about 3.5 billion years ago.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Each cubic foot of Martian soil was found to contain around two pints of water, not freely accessible but attached to minerals.</div>
<div style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 16px !important; line-height: 23px !important; outline: none;">
Rover is now about to start climbing Mount Sharp, an 18,000ft-high mountain at the centre of the Gale Crater, and scientists hope that its sedimentary layers will provide tantalising snapshots of Martian history.</div>

From Mars rovers to the development of the next generation telecoms satellites, the direction of Britain’s investment in European space projects was decided earlier this month (02 December 2014) as the Minister for Universities, Science and Cities Greg Clark finalised negotiations for the UK at the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Ministerial Council in Luxembourg.</div>
<div style="border: none; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.31579; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 7px 0px 3px;">
The outcome of the Ministerial negotiations will strengthen the UK role in a number of areas, including telecommunications and microgravity research. The UK space industry forecasts that the new package of investment will enable it to pursue new markets worth over £1.5 billion. This will support the UK’s ambition to grow a £30 billion space industry by 2030.</div>

Through this investment the UK will lead the development of a new type of smart, lower cost telecommunications satellite and has also agreed the first order from major European satcom operator Eutelsat, who is calling it their ‘Quantum class’ satellite. Industry estimates that further commercialisation of this technology could win global orders worth over £1 billion. The satellite’s novel telecommunications payload will be developed by Airbus Defence and Space UK and carried on a new small geostationary satellite platform built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. Eutelsat will establish a UK base to manage its involvement in the project.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><b>AFI Docs has been without a permanent director since Sky Sitney stepped down in February after eight years on the job. Her spot was temporarily filled by Christine O’Malley, who produced “Wordplay” and “I.O.U.S.A.” And it was O’Malley who recommended Lumpkin for the job when she heard that American Film Institute president Bob Gazzale was looking for a triple-threat leader who could make movies, produce big events and bring people together. Lumpkin began attending AFI Docs in 2009 — back when it was still called Silverdocs — after he began working at the International Documentary Association, a filmmaker advocacy group.</b></span></div>

In addition to Sitney’s departure and the festival’s name change, the event has also expanded in recent years from AFI’s Silver Theatre in Silver Spring to a scattering of theaters across the D.C. area. The festival’s sponsorship has also shifted from a long-time partnership with the Discovery Channel to Audi, and then last year to AT&T, which will continue its sponsorship during the 2015 festival. In addition, a long-time filmmakers’ conference was discontinued in favor of a greater push to have attendees interact with policymakers and advocates. </span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.8em;">Some worried the expansion and shifting focus would diminish its community feel, but Lumpkin remains optimistic about the potential for growth.</span></b><br />
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<b><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">“I think that the AFI Docs and its expansion to D.C. is a great opportunity for filmmakers and also for an expanded audience,” he said. </span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.8em;">Local documentarian Katy Chevigny, who directed this year’s “E-Team” and has participated in the festival since her film “Deadline” screened there in 2004, has high hopes for the new director. </span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.8em;">“I’m sure IDA is going to miss him because I think he’s done great things there,” Chevigny said. “Both these jobs are tough jobs. Running IDA and keeping it relevant is a tough job and running AFI Docs and making it really great and drawing people to Washington when it’s a competitive festival field is also a tough job. But I think he’s done really well at IDA, with that particular tough job, so that gives me confidence he’s going to succeed at AFI Docs as well.”</span></b></div>
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.8em; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<b><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Right now Lumpkin foresees his biggest challenge as continuing the festival’s high quality and basically making sure he “doesn’t mess up.”</span><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 1.8em;">His first test comes with the 13th annual festival, which is slated for June 17-21, 2015.</span></b></div>

Leading UK space organisations have joined forces with British ESA Astronaut Tim Peake and Raspberry Pi to offer students a chance to devise and code their own apps or experiment to run in space. Two Raspberry Pi computers are planned to be flown to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Tim’s 6 month mission and both will be connected to a new “Astro Pi” board, loaded with a host of sensors and gadgets.</div>

Launched today (10 Dec 2014) at an event held by the UK Space Agency, the Astro Pi competition will be officially opened at the BETT conference (21-24 January) and will be open to all primary and secondary school aged children who are resident in the United Kingdom. The competition will be supported by a comprehensive suite of teaching resources that are being developed by ESERO-UK and Raspberry Pi.</div>

I’m really excited about this project, born out of the cooperation among UK industries and institutions. There is huge scope for fun science and useful data gathering using the Astro Pi sensors on board the International Space Station. This competition offers a unique chance for young people to learn core computing skills that will be extremely useful in their future. It’s going to be a lot of fun!</div>

In the primary school age category, teams will be asked to devise and describe an original idea for an experiment or application which can be conducted on the Astro Pi by Tim during his mission. The two best submissions will get the opportunity to work with the Astro Pi team to interpret their ideas and the team at the Raspberry Pi Foundation will then code them ready for flight on the ISS.</div>
<div style="border: none; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.31579; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 7px 0px 3px;">
In the secondary school age group, the competition will be run across three age categories, one for each of Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 (in England and Wales, and their equivalent ages in Scotland and Northern Ireland). In the first phase, competitors can submit their ideas for experiments and applications. At least the best 50 submissions in each age category will win a Raspberry Pi computer and an Astro Pi board on which to code their idea. In phase 2, all teams will develop code based on their original concept and two winning teams will be selected in each age category. The winning teams’ code will be readied for flight by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and CGI.</div>

As well as having their code uploaded to the ISS, all winning teams will each receive a class set of Raspberry Pi and Astro Pi boards, meet the Astro Pi team and participate in a winners event during Tim’s flight.</div>
<div style="border: none; font-size: 19px; line-height: 1.31579; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 7px 0px 3px;">
In addition to the main prizes, each of the UKspace companies supporting the project have offered a prize. These prizes will be awarded to the best submission associated with each of the themes, across the age ranges.</div>

A Key UC regents committee moved today to raise tuition by as much as 5% in each of the next five years despite opposition from the governor, legislative leaders and students.<br />
The regents committee on long range planning approved the hike in a<br />
7-2 vote after an unusual debate that pitted the state’s most powerful political leaders against administrators of the 10-campus UC system. The full board of regents is scheduled<br />
to vote Thursday on the proposed increase, which would end a three-year freeze on tuition.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
UC officials said the increase could be lowered if enough state funding comes through.<br />
<br />
Gov. Jerry Brown argued strongly against the tuition increase and instead proposed an<br />
in-depth study of such basic educational and cost issues as getting students to graduate in three years,<br />
offering more online courses and consolidating programs duplicated across UC campuses.<br />

He and student regent Sadia Saifuddin cast the two dissenting votes.<br />
For undergraduates who are California residents, tuition next year could rise to $12,804,<br />
not including room, board and books. By the 2019-20 school year, that could increase to $15,564.<br />
<br />
UC President Janet Napolitano has said the university needs more money to help cover rising<br />
costs of pensions and salary costs, hire more faculty and to boost the number of California undergraduates by 5,000.<br />
The regents held their debate and vote about the tuition hike at UC San Francisco, where about<br />
100 people protested the proposed hike. The scene became chaotic at some points with shoving<br />
matches between police and demonstrators. <br />
<br />
One Berkeley student was arrested on suspicion of inciting a riot after protesters forced their way<br />
through metal barricades and police security lines. A large glass door shattered.<br />
<br />
Former UC Chancellor Karl Pister, 89, said he was knocked down. In all his years at UC,<br />
he said, "Today is the first time I was knocked down."<br />

LOS ANGELES—California is hoping to conjure some real-life jobs in the smoke-and-mirrors world of visual effects for movies and television shows—part of the state’s latest attempt to win back its most famous industry.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The state recently expanded its tax-incentive program for film and TV productions, offering a larger credit for visual-effects work done in the state and scrapping restrictions that had excluded big-budget movies, which often feature the highest number of whiz-bang effects. Visual-effects artists create special effects and animation and do visual cleanup in “postproduction” work, which can include everything from brightening the lighting of a scene to building whole virtual worlds.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The expanded incentives are a little-noticed part of a larger package designed to lure back productions that have fled California for generous tax programs in other states and countries, which can cover 30% or more of a project’s total cost.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
State officials say the visual-effects credit gives an incentive to an industry that can rebuild a highly paid, stable workforce once centered in California but now scattered. Even more ambitiously, they are hoping the subsidy could bring back big-budget, effects-laden feature films that create thousands of jobs not just for camera operators and lighting technicians, but for hairdressers, electricians and others.</div>

The new legislation, which more than triples the state’s current program to an annual<a class="icon none" href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/california-lawmakers-move-to-increase-tax-credits-for-tv-film-producers-1409167471" style="background: 0px 0px / 30px 30px no-repeat; color: #0080c3; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_new">$330 million in incentives over five years</a>, was signed by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown last month and goes into effect in 2015. Part of that annual allotment will go toward tax credits for visual-effects work, now covering 25% of eligible expenditures in the field, up from 20% under the old program.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
California faces significant competition from states including New York, which offers credits that can cover as much as 45% of postproduction work. What’s more, New York and some other places offer postproduction incentives that are open to any film or television show that qualifies, while California’s only gives the credits to features filmed in the state.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Most of the visual-effects industry has left California for places such as the U.K., Canada and New Zealand, which began offering specific incentives for postproduction work about 15 years ago. Those countries tend to attract higher-end visual-effects work that require skilled technicians, while more menial, repetitive tasks are often outsourced to countries such as India and Malaysia.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“If they can’t get it all, they want a piece of it,” said Joseph Chianese, a vice president and film-tax consultant at Entertainment Partners, a production incentive consulting firm in Burbank, Calif.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
That has left California’s industry hanging, with some visual-effects firms filing for bankruptcy and others leaving the state.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Big-budget movies used to have little reason to film in California, because the previous incentive program was only open to films with budgets costing less than $75 million. Under the expansion, features with budgets of any size can qualify, though the tax credit is only applicable to $100 million of the outlay.</div>

“When you get into the higher-budget, $100-million-plus features, that really drives the visual-effects work,” said Amy Lemisch, executive director of the California Film Commission, which <a class="icon none" href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10000872396390444354004578058662753344552" style="background: 0px 0px / 30px 30px no-repeat; color: #0080c3; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_new">administers the incentive program</a>.</div>

Among the 25 live-action films with budgets greater than $100 million released in 2013, almost half of the jobs generated went to visual-effects workers, according to Film L.A. Inc., nonprofit that helps coordinate filming permits in the Los Angeles area. On some films, like “Man of Steel,” the share was even higher. Of the 2,215 people who worked on the Superman epic, 1,438 were in visual effects—the largest number of them in New Zealand.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Hollywood may have invented it, but others have learned how to do it,” said Eric Roth, executive director of the Visual Effects Society, an honorary organization with about 3,000 members.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
California has a lot of catching up to do, but the legislation is “a step in the right direction,” said Lee Berger, a veteran visual-effects executive who until this month served as president of the visual-effects firm Rhythm & Hues Studios Inc.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The story of the El Segundo, Calif., company is one the new legislation is trying to avoid repeating. The company, known for Academy Award-winning work on features such as “Life of Pi,” filed for bankruptcy early last year. In its filing, the company said tax breaks and lower labor costs internationally can give other territories a cost advantage of as much as 60% over California firms.</div>
<div style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Chronicle SSm', serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The company was acquired by an affiliate of Los Angeles-based Prana Studios Inc. in March 2013, but its workforce of 250 today is a fraction of the 1,500 it sometimes employed when times were flush.</div>

These three images show emission from the dust in the coma surrounding the nucleus of Comet C/2013 A1 – also known as Comet Siding Spring – as observed at three different far-infrared wavelengths with ESA's Herschel space observatory.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Discovered on 3 January 2013, Comet Siding Spring is an Oort Cloud comet on its first journey into the inner Solar System. It will reach perihelion – its closest approach to the Sun – on 25 October 2014 at 1.4 AU (about 210,000,000 km). Having spent most of its life far from the Sun, this comet is much more pristine than periodic comets – those that orbit the Sun every two hundred years or less – and for that reason is particularly interesting to study. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
On 31 March 2013, not long after it was discovered, astronomers observed Comet Siding Spring with Herschel. This was just one month before the observatory exhausted its supply of liquid helium coolant and ceased to collect data. When Herschel observed it, the comet was about 6.5 AU from the Sun. The observations were performed following a proposal for Director’s Discretionary Time from Peter Mattisson from the Stockholm Amateur Astronomers (STAR) in Sweden.</div>

The three panels show the comet at wavelengths of 70 microns (shown in blue), 100 microns (shown in green) and 160 microns (shown in red). Telescopes observing at these long wavelengths see the direct thermal emission from dust in the comet's coma.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
The coma is resolved at the two shorter wavelengths (in the left and central panels). Close inspection of these two images reveals that the coma's shape is slightly elongated towards the left – in the direction opposite the Sun. From these images, astronomers estimated that the coma extends some 50,000 km from the comet's nucleus. The structure of the coma can hardly be resolved at the longest wavelength probed by Herschel (in the right panel).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
These observations were also used to calculate the total mass of dust in the coma, which amounts to about 300,000,000 kg. At the time of the Herschel observations, the comet appeared to be quite active – astronomers estimated that the activity had begun even prior to the comet's discovery, when it was about 8 AU from the Sun. Observations performed at a later stage with space and ground-based telescopes showed that the comet's activity has increased quite slowly over the past months, which is quite unusual for an Oort Cloud comet. There are even some hints that the comet's activity has declined recently. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Astronomers have been closely monitoring the activity of Comet Siding Spring because, a few days before perihelion, the comet will have an historic close approach to Mars, passing some 140,000 km from the Red Planet on 19 October 2014. The comet's current moderate activity is good news for the fleet of spacecraft that are operated at Mars by various space agencies (including ESA's Mars Express) because it means a low risk of dust particles hitting the instruments on board. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
Since Oort Cloud comets are discovered with an extremely short notice before perihelion – a few years at most – it is virtually impossible to plan a space mission to fly by such a comet. This is what makes Comet Siding Spring and its closest approach to Mars truly unique, as the spacecraft at Mars will have the chance to observe an Oort Cloud comet from a distance that could not possibly be achieved otherwise.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #031e31; font-family: Verdana, arial; font-size: 12px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-top: 15px; outline: none; padding: 0px;">
The analysis of the Herschel images was performed by Cs. Kiss (Konkoly Observatory, Budapest, Hungary), T.G. Müller (Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Garching, Germany), M. Kidger (ESAC, European Space Agency, Madrid, Spain), P. Mattisson (STAR, Stockholm Amateur Astronomers, Sweden), and G. Marton (Konkoly Observatory, Budapest, Hungary).</div>
